The systemic challenges facing girls in sport are significant. From lack of safe, inclusive spaces to a shortage of visible female coaches and leaders, girls often confront substantial barriers that lead to a dramatic drop-off in participation by adolescence. In the Illawarra region, however, our programs are working to change this narrative.
Thanks to grant funding from the Australian Government’s Play Our Way program, we are able to deliver Girls United, where we’ve been fortunate to work along-side the Sydney FC Foundation’s Sky’s Her Limit program to tackle these issues head-on.
Girls United provides a vital, female-led environment that acts as a safe, inclusive space for young players, while the Sky’s Her Limit program, run by the Sydney FC Foundation, builds confidence, leadership, and a sense of belonging. It was an inevitable alignment when Creating Chances visited Sydney FC’s Sky Park.
During a special day, students from Kanahooka High School and Wollongong High School of Performing Arts were able to access powerful female role models and pathways. Participants engaged with the professional football ecosystem, connecting with Sydney FC coaches and players to understand potential career and development paths.
These sessions, led by Sydney FC players were complemented by the students delivering their very own sessions for each other, and afforded feedback from the Sydney FC coaching staff.
The day was not just about playing football—it was about promoting equitable opportunities for women and girls to benefit from sport at all levels and locations. It’s an inspiring chance for the Illawarra’s young women to get outside their community, connect, and realise their full potential.
