For Darnell Heatherill, the journey at Brewarrina Central School started thirteen years ago, but his recent path as a School-based Trainee has redefined his future. Enrolled in a Cert III in Sport and Recreation, Darnell balances his online studies with hands-on experience at Creating Chances and with Rugby NSW.
Growing up in a remote community, Darnell recognised that opportunities to travel or coach were rare. He chose an SBAT to break that cycle, not just for himself, but for the younger kids who watch him lead. As the 2026 School Captain and an Australian Olympic Committee Changemaker, Darnell has learned that his energy sets the tone for everyone else. Whether he’s coaching rugby or helping out at the local pool, he knows that showing up with a smile and a positive attitude is what truly keeps the kids engaged.
Darnell has grown into a confident communicator. He’s moved past his initial shyness to become a mentor who leads by example—whether at school, or on the field.
For Darnell, this journey is a pathway to give back to the community that raised him. He aspires to continue his work with Creating Chances and NSW Rugby Union, mentoring young people in his community so they feel confident to represent their hometown anywhere.
"My traineeship with Creating Chances has taught me to have confidence in my abilities. It's taught me how to connect with others and how important being a role model for the kids in my community is. Seeing the impact my coaching can have on them makes me proud of myself."
