Empowering Local Youth: A Story of Partnership and Potential at Tamworth Rotary Club

Tamworth High School student Amber shares her School-Based Trainee journey with Tamworth Rotary Club.

There is a spark that happens when community leaders meet the next generation of changemakers. Recently, that spark was on full display at the Tamworth Rotary Club. For the team at Creating Chances, this wasn’t just a routine presentation, it was a powerful testament to the strength of community partnership and the incredible transformation possible when young people are given a platform to shine.

2 1 Creating Chances

At the heart of the connection was Amber, a School-Based Trainee (SBAT) with Creating Chances. Amber’s journey with us is one of resilience and remarkable growth, and she chose this stage to share her story, an honest look at her development from a student once uncertain about her future to a confident, experienced leader within our programs.

Amber’s speech was a highlight of the Rotary breakfast. She spoke candidly about her time before the traineeship, when she felt disconnected from school and unsure of her path. Fast forward to today, and that hesitation has been replaced by a drive to excel. Through her work in the Champions, Coaches, and Football United programs at Tamworth Oxley High School and Tamworth West Public School, Amber has grown significantly.

She detailed the professional skills she’s honed: the ability to “read the room,” the necessity of clear communication, and the leadership required to mentor younger students. Perhaps most importantly, she spoke about the supportive network at Creating Chances. She noted how her coworkers and mentors provided the scaffold she needed to not just re-engage with her education, but to thrive within it. As she aptly put it, she has been able to take the very skills she teaches to the kids, teamwork, trust, and proactive safety, and integrate them into her own life.

This presentation served as a powerful reminder of the importance of partnerships. The Tamworth Rotary Club’s commitment to hosting Creating Chances provided more than just a speaking opportunity; it provided validation for Amber and her peers. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, with members of the club visibly impressed by her maturity and insight.

This success isn’t just about one speech. It highlights how local organisations like the Tamworth Rotary Club, opening their doors to hear the voices of young trainees, play a vital role in the Youth Development Pathway. When businesses and service clubs partner with organisations like ours, they help turn potential into reality.

For the Creating Chances team, watching Amber present her journey, confident and poised, was a moment of pride. It reaffirmed why we do what we do. By fostering connections between our students and the broader community, we aren’t just creating trainees; we are helping to raise the next generation of community leaders. We look forward to many more opportunities to share these stories and continue building a brighter future together.
