Walking in the Footsteps of Heroes: Concord High’s Super Coach Journey

Connecting World War II history with modern leadership, resilience, and future pathway readiness with Concord High Students.

What an incredible day of discovery, reflection, and growth! Concord High School students recently embarked on a rich educational excursion to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway. As part of our Super Coach program, this experience seamlessly blended youth leadership coaching with Future Pathways employment readiness. Throughout the day, students saw firsthand how historical resilience translates directly into essential life skills for life beyond school.

1 Creating Chances

The day began with an immersive presentation on the history of the Kokoda Track campaign during World War II. Students explored the brutal nature of the terrain in Papua New Guinea; dense rainforests, knee-deep mud, steep mountain climbs, and oppressive weather conditions.

The educational value reached a whole new level through our guest speakers. Students had the privilege of hearing real stories from people who have personally walked the actual track, alongside relatives of veterans who fought at Kokoda. Hearing firsthand accounts of bravery brought history off the textbook pages and gave students a meaningful personal perspective on Australian service and sacrifice.

Next, the group transitioned into a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) simulation of the Kokoda Track. By putting on VR headsets, students experienced a 360 degree view of the punishing landscape. Navigating virtual ridges and steep ravines helped them grasp the physical scale of the challenge faced by Australian soldiers in 1942, creating an immediate, visceral connection to the lessons of the day.

Armed with history and VR context, students took to the outdoors for a guided tour of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway. Designed to replicate the trail, the walkway features designated memorial stations representing real villages along the original track.
